California birth records are maintained by the California Department of Public Health, Office of Vital Records. At this time, the Vital Records Office only accepts requests sent by mail. And it may take up to several weeks for them to process you order.
A $14 fee is required to order a birth certificate. If the record cannot be found, they will keep your payment as a search fee under State law, and will issue a Certificate of No Public Record for you.
There are two kinds of birth certificate copies: authorized copies and informational copies.
You can obtain an authorized copy of a birth certificate only if you are one of the following individuals:
- The person named on the certificate.
- Child, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, domestic partner, or spouse of the person.
- legal guardian or a parent of the person.
- Someone specified in law.
Otherwise, you can only get an informational copy. This copy is identical to an authorized copy, but has an “INFORMATIONAL” statement on it.
Informational and authorized copies of birth certificates are both certified.
