The registration and certification of births that occur in North Dakota are offered by The Division of Vital Records. They manage other events such as marriages, deaths and divorces too. The office also provides statistical data on a lot of subjects about vital events.
All certified copies have a raised seal indicating authenticity and are issued on security paper.
You can order a certified copy of a birth certificate if you are:
- The person named on the certificate, (must be 16 or older)
- The mother or father named on the certificate
- An individual with a court order or other legal documentation giving you the right to request a copy
You should also provide the following information:
- Your relationship to the person
- Full name of person at birth
- Date, county and/or city of birth
- Father’s and mother’s name (including maiden name)
- Daytime phone number
- Your name and address
Send your birth certificate order including completed application form, required fee and a copy of your proof of identification to the office located at:

The fee for a certificate copy is $7 and once your request is received in the North Dakota Vital Records office, it can take up to 7 business days to be processed.
You can also visit the office in person by going to the State Capitol Building located in Bismarck, ND. The opening hours of office are from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (everyday except for weekends and holidays.)
