South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the Division of Vital Records officially keeps vital information related to marriages, divorces, births and deaths occurring in South Carolina. Every year, lots of people request for vital records services. In 2004, for example, around 300,000 requests were processed (190,000 at the county level and 110,000 at the state office were processed).
In 1915, South Carolina was required by law to file birth and death certificates. Today, DHEC’s state office contains over 9 million original birth and death records.
All 46 counties of South Carolina have office of vital records in the public health department of the counties. Branch offices can only search for death and birth records.
DHEC is allowed by state law to request a fee for the records search and for other services, such as the issuance of certified copies of birth.
The following persons can order a certified copy of a birth certificate:
- The parent(s) named on the certificate
- The individual named on the record (must be at least 18 years old)
- The guardian, or a legal representative
If the registrant is not alive, immediate family members or their legal representatives can request for a certified copy.
Necessary information:
- Full name of the person
- Full date and county of birth
- Full maiden name of the mother
- Father’s full name
